Xaló Forat de Bèrnia
The Sierra de Bèrnia, nestled between the Alicante regions of Marina Baixa and Marina Alta, is an ideal destination for hiking enthusiasts. This circular route, classified as PR-CV 7, is approximately 9 kilometers long and offers an experience that combines spectacular natural landscapes, historical elements, and moderate physical challenges.
Start at Casas de Bèrnia
The route begins at Casas de Bèrnia, an area where you can park your vehicle and find informational panels about the trail. This is the official starting point, and from here, you take a path that gradually leads to the Font de Bèrnia.
Font de Bèrnia
Font de Bèrnia is a natural spring that emerges in this mountain range and serves as a perfect spot to stock up on water before continuing the ascent. This initial stretch of the route allows you to enjoy a beautiful natural setting, surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation such as pines, oaks, and aromatic shrubs.
Ascent to Forat de Bèrnia
As you proceed, the trail begins to gain elevation, heading towards Forat de Bèrnia, one of the most emblematic points of the route. This natural tunnel passes through the mountain and offers a unique experience: when you cross it, you access the southern face of the range, where you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Altea Bay, the Mediterranean, and the surrounding area.

The passage through the Forat may require some flexibility, as the tunnel is narrow and low in some areas. Therefore, it is recommended to wear comfortable clothing and pay attention to the terrain.
Descent towards the Fort de Bèrnia
After crossing the Forat, the trail descends along the southern slope of the mountain. This section leads to the ruins of the Fort de Bèrnia, an old fortress built in 1562 by order of Philip II. Its purpose was to protect the region from potential pirate attacks and contain the Moorish rebellions. Although it is now in ruins, the Fort de Bèrnia retains a historical air that invites you to imagine what life was like back then.
Return to Casas de Bèrnia
The final section of the route heads towards Coll de Xaló, from where the final descent to Casas de Bèrnia begins. This last stretch of the trail allows you to enjoy the mountainous landscapes of Marina Alta, the Serra del Ferrer, and close the circular route.
Difficulty: Moderate, with some sections requiring small climbs and attention to rocky terrain.
Best time: Spring and autumn are ideal for this route, as the temperatures are milder.
