Molí del Giner
The Molí de Giner, one of the four flour mills that harnessed the power of the Xaló river, is an iconic example of Valencian hydraulic heritage. This mill, which has been documented since the 14th century, has witnessed centuries of agricultural and industrial activity, adapting to technological changes until it ceased operations in the 1970s.
It is a type of "cárcavo" mill, characteristic for its underground structure that housed the "rodezno," the key element for driving the grinding mechanism. Recent archaeological excavations have revealed remains of the original medieval pond, confirming its dating to the 14th century, as well as later adaptations made during the industrial era. Among the finds are mill elements, such as millstones and cranes, which will be a fundamental part of its future musealization.
Currently, the Molí de Giner is part of an ambitious rehabilitation project that will transform the building into a multifunctional cultural space. With an investment of 750,000 euros, the new Espai Cultural Molí de Giner will feature a library, an open-air auditorium, and an exhibition that will interpret the historical evolution of the mill from its medieval origins to its industrial stage.
According to Gerard Fullana, Xaló's Heritage Councillor, this project will make Molí de Giner one of the most relevant hydraulic heritage sites in the Valencian Community, highlighting its uniqueness in preserving its entire historical sequence in a single space.
Upon completion of the works, the Molí de Giner will not only recover its splendor but will also become a symbol of the effort to preserve and enhance the historical and cultural legacy of Xaló.
