Iglesia de Parcent
A Historical and Architectural Legacy
The Church of Puríssima Concepció, located in the heart of Parcent, is a living testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of this town in the Valencian Community. This temple, which now stands majestically in the main square, is the second to be built on the same site, having been erected over the remains of an ancient mosque. Its position at the top of the alcudia where the town is situated gives it an emblematic character, dominating the landscape with its imposing presence.
Origins and Reconstructions
The history of this church is marked by key moments that have defined its current structure. During the Morisco revolts of 1609, the original temple was partially destroyed, along with the first parish archive. It was not until 1630 that the ruins were finally demolished, and construction began on a new church. Under the direction of Father Pere Torrà, the church was blessed and inaugurated in 1638. Initially, the building was modest in size, featuring only a main altar and two side altars.
However, over time, the church underwent several expansions. In 1734, a century after its construction, a major renovation was carried out to increase its capacity. Later, in 1858, the presbytery was built, and in 1929, the bell tower was completed, which was restored in 1949. These interventions reflect the evolving needs of the parish community and the desire to preserve and beautify the temple.
Transformations in the 20th Century
One of the most significant milestones in the recent history of the church was the arrival of the steward Luis Gil Salelles in 1953. Under his leadership, numerous renovations were undertaken that completely transformed the interior of the church. The presbytery, the main altar, the sacristy, the choir, the communion chapel, and the bell tower vault were renovated, along with most of the altars. Thanks to his work, the current appearance of the church is largely his doing.
In addition to the interior renovations, Gil Salelles also oversaw the construction of the rectory (1956-57) and the parish hall, consolidating the architectural ensemble we know today.
Architecture and Artistic Details
The Church of Puríssima Concepció is a rectangular building with a single nave and side chapels located between buttresses. The nave is covered by a barrel vault supported by ornamental arches, giving it a solemn and elegant appearance. On the exterior, the bell tower stands out, with a square base and a light three-story structure adorned with neo-Gothic motifs.
The main façade, with simple lines, features a lintel portal framed by two pilasters made of Jávea stone, the only remnants from the 18th century. The interior is illuminated by small openings distributed along the central nave, creating a serene and intimate atmosphere.
The Bells: A Sonic Heritage
One of the most notable elements of the church is its bell tower, which houses three bells listed in the General Inventory of Valencian Cultural Heritage. Each of them has its own history and artistic value:
- The Sant Llorenç Bell: Made of bronze, it is decorated with a cross, the image of the Virgin of Pilar, the founder's mark, an inscription, and topped with vegetal motifs.
- The Puríssima Concepció Bell: With modernist influences, it features floral decorations, angel faces, a cross, the foundry mark, an inscription, and the Virgin's monogram.
- The Hores Bell: Considered the most valuable in terms of heritage, this bronze bell lacks an inscription but is adorned with a cross and a shield with four bars, a crown, and laurel branches.
A Symbol of Faith and Community
The Church of Puríssima Concepció is not only an architectural monument but also a symbol of the faith and identity of the people of Parcent. From its construction on the foundations of an ancient mosque to the renovations that have transformed it over the centuries, this temple has witnessed the history of the town and its people.
Today, its bell tower continues to mark the hours and call the faithful to prayer, while its interior welcomes worshippers in a space filled with history and spirituality. The Church of Puríssima Concepció is undoubtedly a legacy that deserves to be preserved and cherished by future generations.
