Els Molins del Collao
Located 300 meters above sea level, the windmills of Collao were built in 1850, taking advantage of the wind and sea breeze. Originally there were four, but today only three remain in a more or less preserved state.
These windmills were used to grind wheat, a key product at the time. By the end of the 19th century, they fell into disuse due to the arrival of new energy systems and the reduction of wheat cultivation in the region.
With a circular structure and a truncated cone tower, the windmills have ashlar walls one meter thick. Their height is 7.30 meters, and their diameter is 7 meters. Access to the floors was via a staircase located next to the entrance door.
The windmill was divided into three floors: the lower one for storing flour, the middle one as the miller's residence and storage area, and the upper one with the grinding mechanism. It had up to four windows facing the winds. The roof was made of wood and plant fibers.
In 1968, a water reservoir was built in Collao to supply the population of Benissa. During the 1970s and 1990s, more reservoirs were added. The windmills were used as cement storage and were partially restored.
Today, the windmills are within a fenced enclosure that complies with health regulations. Two of them are accessible after booking an appointment with the Municipal Water Service, while the third is privately owned. Visits are conducted on Saturday mornings.
